Forwards Nate Watson, Justin Minaya & Noah Horchler - as well as guard Al Durham - graduated, and sharpshooter AJ Reeves declared for the NBA Draft. Cooley recruited Kentucky transfer Bryce Hopkins, South Carolina transfer Devin Carter, and Louisville graduate transfer Noah Locke - all of whom made immediate impacts. Cooley led the Friars to an overall record of 21–12, and went 13–7 in Big East play to finish in fifth place. Providence was eliminated by the UConn Huskies in the first round of the Big East tournament, and was awarded an at-large bid as an eleven-seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. The Friars were eliminated by #6 Kentucky in the first round.

In 1996, Cooley joined Al Skinner's staff as an assistant coach for URI, before following Skinner to Boston College in 1997. In nine seasons as an assistant at BC, Cooley helped the Eagles post a 175–108 overall record, which included five 20-win seasons. The team captured the 2000–01 Big East Conference championship, five NCAA tournament berths, and one National Invitation Tournament, giving the team six post-season berths in nine seasons. Following college, Cooley taught history at Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School in Massachusetts from 1994 to 1996.

The salon uses organic products made with a focus on sustainability. Most bracket experts think the team will be somewhere around a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament, even if they win the Big East championship this week in New York. They’re also one of the few teams in the history of the conference to win the regular season title and not have a single player be named first-team all-Big East.

Without a pro team to call its own, this is a city that has consumed Friars basketball. Two years ago as it was making its push to the Sweet 16, Providence ranked 28th in all attendance (home, road and neutral), with games involving the Friars attracting 350,891 fans. Of the non-power conference schools ranked above it — Villanova, Creighton and Marquette — only Nova has a smaller home arena; none has a smaller enrollment.

Fans, of course, love a conspiracy theory and document diggers eventually revealed that, though the Cooley manse went on the market on March 20, a notice of sale disclosure was signed on March 3. That was five days after the Friars played at Georgetown and in the middle of their end-season fizzle. On March 1, a team that never loses at home fell to Xavier and on March 4 — senior night — Providence stunk up the joint, dropping an clunker to a Seton Hall team that sat at .500 in conference. Which, perhaps, is naive, but their faith had good foundation. Cooley is no carpetbagger or Harold Hill conning the city with a magic elixir. He was raised on Sassafras Street, just six miles from Providence’s campus.
He knows that Providence is the place he grew up, the place he became known statewide. On the court, it was a success — though the degree can be debatable. In the 33 seasons before he arrived, the Friars reached the NCAA tournament seven times.

He ponied up for two as soon as they went on sale, joining an eager fan base that gobbled up all of the available season tickets six months prior to tipoff. That’s where Cooley finds himself for the moment, as much defined by where he was as where he is. He knows that his daughter, Olivia, graduated from Georgetown and is building a life in the District. He knows how much having the elder Thompson as a role model — as one of the few Black coaches in the game at the time — helped shape him.

For many of those in the film industry, the era ushered in by television was a death knell. But for Cooley, who never made it in film, it was a blessing. Following his incredible success in local clubs, he was offered a western-style variety show on KTLA in 1948. Then an editor told me there was no chance that I could travel to New York because of this mysterious virus that seemed to be spreading, and I was angrier than Cooley gets at referees late in games. The bosses were right, of course; both the Big East Tournament and the NCAA Tournament were soon canceled, and the world pretty much shut down. What makes Cooley’s approach to his hair unique is his unapologetic authenticity. In an industry often characterized by rigid conventions, his willingness to experiment with his appearance challenges stereotypes and encourages self-acceptance. His hair has sparked conversations, not just about fashion or trends, but about embracing one’s individuality without fear of judgment.

But the routine postseason runs and assumed national rankings ended in 1979, when Providence switched from being an independent to the newly formed Big East. Gavitt, as Friars athletics director, was the driving force behind the creation of the Big East and served as its first commissioner. But as a Providence grad who has been on the athletic department staff since 2004, Napolillo knew that people would. Corralling public sympathy and taking up the charge for an angry fan base isn’t a bad idea when, eight months into the job, you’re charged with making the single most important hire on campus. Get-in price is upwards of $150, lower court seats are in the $350 to $500 range, and it will run you nearly $700 to sit midcourt, and near the visitor bench in prime heckling territory. (Comparatively, tickets for the next home game, against Creighton, start at $25 on StubHub).
In their win over Creighton on February 26, Providence won its first-ever Big East regular season title. Cooley led the Friars to the program's sixth Sweet 16 appearance, where they dropped a 66–61 game to Kansas, the eventual national champion. Providence made its first appearance as a 4-seed in the NCAA Tournament, which was their highest-ever. For Providence's success, Cooley was tabbed as the winner of the 2021–22 Naismith Coach of the Year Award. In his second season, Cooley led the Friars to a 19–15 record overall and a 9–9 mark in league play.

They envisioned finally finding their Carnesecca or Boeheim, the man who would serve as the face of the program and the university. Dave Gavitt, who led the Friars to the Final Four in 1973, used his coaching connections to convince his peers and administrators to combine forces and start an East Coast basketball conference. He plopped the league’s offices here (they’ve since moved to New York) and the Providence Civic Center even hosted the first Big East tournament. Part of that was education, of course, and Cooley turned that into a job teaching history at a nearby high school. One of Cooley’s teammates at Stonehill, Steve McCracken, graduated a year before Cooley. Before he moved to Florida to begin a career, he received a two-page, handwritten note from Cooley thanking him for the memories and giving him best wishes for the future.
